Sweaty gloves on a three mile run during January in England?

Yesterday was not a good day for a short, easy training run. Just to be sure, I consulted my ten week training plan, and it didn’t advise I train in a wind tunnel in the run up to week one activities. I am not really exaggerating. Semis were blown over on the freeways. Tiles were ripped from the roofs of shopping centers 5 miles from where I live. Sadly, 10 people in Britain were killed as a result of the gales that swept this island before heading to cause more havoc on the mainland.

If I put my mind to it, I can usually form enough excuses to remain sedentary when the weather is less than perfect. I’m hungry. I’m cold and can’t feel my feet, so how can I run? I need to email my mom. I need to clean the toilets. I could go on. But, yesterday I figured that what my excuses, in collusion with the strange weather, were telling me was probably right. It’s a good day to be ‘off’.

It seems that this year something crazy is happening. Some are calling it el Niño. Some may wonder if it’s a harbinger of worse things to come. The fact is, it’s just not really that cold here. I read of snow in Los Angeles and the orange crop devastation, while I contemplate camping next month when we go to see the Indigo Girls in Brighton. (I mean yes, on my run today I wore warm tights and gloves. But, they were unnecessary. I had to take the gloves off halfway through the run. And I am kind of a cold weather wimp.)

Today the sun is out. The birds are chirping. A light breeze gently sways leafless branches. It makes me feel like spring could be on the way. It is a good day to run. If nothing else.

Today’s run

Distance: 3.2 miles

Time: 31:02

Pace: 9:41 min/mile

On your mark, get set, GO!!
